GTA Prologue: Walkthrough and Easter Eggs
In this video, we will take you through the opening mission in Grand Theft Auto 5 Prologue, including the heist, shooting using cover, and escaping from the cops.
The Prologue is a great little idea by Rockstar, acting as both a tutorial for the basic mechanics of the game and giving you a risk-free way to try out different controls and tactics. For this exercise, we assume that you are new to the game.
We start in the lobby of the bank in North Yangton, nine years before the main story. As soon as Trevor kicks the door in, we have control over Michael. Move into the secure area and point your weapon at the security guards and clerks to get them to move. Pointing at their heads may or may not get them to move faster, but don’t pull the trigger or the scene will be reset. Next, look to the top left of your screen for some new prompts.
Use these to bring up your phone, enter the contact list, and detonate the charges. Head down the corridor to the left – you can safely run through this part of the level as you won’t encounter anyone. Your target is the pile of cash on the trolley in the back of the vault, but don’t forget to wander around and pick up some of the loose cash on the floor.
As you head out of the vault, Michael will be ambushed by a security guard. Unfortunately, there’s no way to avoid this. Take a look at the top left of your screen for the button prompt, switch to Trevor, and shoot the guard clean between the eyes – again, no way to avoid this.
Keep an eye on that top left again for the next set of button prompts. Run up, take cover somewhere far from the set of doors, then break cover using the same button you used to get into it. Head through the doors and over to the wall on the left. Once Brad and Michael are clear of the doors, grab some cover on the first post just to the left. Look at the top left again for instructions on aiming, then aim and shoot the cops and push in upper body shots and head shots. If someone is behind cover, you can shoot a foot or a hand, anything exposed that will drop them and expose them a bit more so you can get in a proper shot. It’s worth noting that if they go down without that little x showing up, they will get back up again, but you can shoot them when they’re down to finish them off.
Push forward as soon as practical and swap to Michael to finish off the remainder of this wave. As soon as you can, move out and take cover behind the car, don’t worry about collecting money or weapons from the bodies. Keep an eye on that top left corner again for instructions on sprinting, grab some cover behind the SUV, then start plugging the next wave again. Push forward as soon as practical onto the final wave, where there’s not much need for cover as Trevor has most of it in hand, then head over to the car.
After Michael takes out the cop car, look top left again for car controls. This section is really just to get a feel for driving, so you’re going to want to stay on the road. Veering off in any direction will reset this part of the mission. As you come to the roadblock, slow down, and hang a right. You cannot beat the train, so don’t worry about trying. Once everyone’s bailed out, they’ll start moving. Don’t skip this scene – it’s pivotal to later events.
After the second shot, you take control of Trevor. Duck behind the dumpster and start lighting everyone up. Watch your left flank too, there are a few cheeky boys who try to get the drop on you. Down doesn’t necessarily mean dead, so I like to drill a few extra rounds in when I can for good measure. Once you’ve taken out a few more locals, you’ll get pulled into a cutscene, and that’s the end of everything you can do. Don’t skip the cutscene again, important exposition.
Easter Eggs
The woman in the heist is Michael’s soon-to-be wife, Amanda. The shooter was FIB Agent Dave Norton, and Brad was most likely not Dave’s target.
